In addtion to offering an attractive lineup of financial products and services to Oakland community residents, PEOPLE'S also supports and engages in a variety of free community programs and
financial education initiatives.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Through the VITA program we prepare taxes free of charge for low-wealth households, saving them thousands of dollars in fees and returning more money directly to the community. At our tax site in 2009 we prepared 315 returns, secured over $405,000 in refunds, saved filers $63,000 in fees, and opened 23 new accounts.
Credit Report Review Sessions
Members meet individually with trained volunteers to learn what is on their credit reports, how to dispute erroneous claims, and how to improve their credit scores.
Financial Workshops & Presentations
Through collaborations with community based organizations, members and potential members have access to workshops on topics ranging from budgeting to credit management and homeownership.
Balance
Balance is a financial literacy online resource available to our members at no charge. Use this link to access the Balance website at any time. When speaking with a counselor, mention that you're a member of People's Federal Credit Union, a division of Self-Help Federal Credit Union.
Oakland Housing Authority
We have partnered with the Oakland Housing Authority to provide many useful workshops to their members. Under the OHA Home Ownership Program, their tenants are required to attend our workshop series. This includes lessons on budgeting, credit, banking, and home buying.
Neighborhood Stabilization
through Foreclosure Recovery
Self-Help is exploring opportunities to finance foreclosure recovery projects in the Bay Area. To support this effort, Self-Help has applied for federal funding. To learn more about Self-Help's plans for using Neighborhood Stabilization Program funding click this link:
